Baking bedlam…14 children, 7 adults, one kitchen! Yet, we managed to produce three pans of yummy bars to share. The hands-down winner was Oreo brownies chosen by our volunteer, Victoria. Victoria has the uncanny ability to come up with kid-friendly treats to bake month after month. I was surprised when she told me that she wasn’t much of a baker prior to starting with this group last year. Not only is she a talented baker, but the kids love working with her as well. These brownies were a triple chocolate mixture of broken Oreo cookies, melted semi-sweet chocolate and cocoa powder. They packed a powerful chocolate punch into each square.
Another delicious selection was Almond Joy Bars. These bars had three layers: a shortbread crust, a coconut and almond soft centre and a coating of semi-sweet chocolate. We ran into a time crunch and had to serve the bars before the chocolate had time to harden. The bars were tasty nonetheless, but very sweet, so smaller portions would definitely be in order for adults.
Our last selection was a simple sugar cookie bar. The kids pronounced them as bland, “tasted like play dough”, yet not a single square remained in the pan! It was a hectic afternoon, but the children left with full tummies, chocolate moustaches and baggies of goodies to take home to share. Success!
